"In light of the fact that the idea for this blog came about over dinner in one of the coveted booths at Elmo's Diner, it's only fitting that our inaugural post focus on this fine establishment.
If the word 'diner' brings to mind images of greasy spoons and stale coffee, you haven't been to Elmo's. The friendliest diner in town, Elmo's on Durham's eclectic 9th Street is a great place to get together with friends for good food on the cheap and they've got lots of vegetarian options, too. Despite its popularity among the college crowd because of its quality and affordability, Elmo's focus on being family-friendly (this place has more booster seats than you can shake a stick at and a seemingly-unlimited amount of coloring supplies), means that it is also a favorite among non-twentysomethings.
Staying true to the traditional diner offering of 'breakfast all day,' Elmo's also branches out and offers daily specials with dishes like seared salmon and tofu stir-fry. The coziness of the atmosphere is ratcheted up even further if you manage to score a corner booth and people-watch while you wait. There's also an Elmo's Diner in Carrboro, but the quality of food and service at the Durham location is far better (although the Carrboro version has a heated outdoor patio that can be fun to eat in during the winter). Besides, this blog is "Welcome to Dur'm," so keep it local."

"To Durhamites, Elmo's is more than a restuaurant. It's a culinary staple in this hungry lil' community of ours. Just ask the throngs of people you're guaranteed to find waiting outside its doors any weekend before 3 p.m. Elmo's does breakfast and it does it well. One bite of their waffles, pancakes, stuffed French toast, quiche or homefries and you're sure to be back. And the biscuits....oh, the biscuits! This is the South and we take our biscuits seriously. Elmo's are hearty, yet fluffy and when smeared with jelly or orange marmelade (my personal choice), well, only the strongest among us can resist the desire to order another to-go for the next day's breakfast. Thankfully, Elmo's serve breakfast all day because their lunch/dinner dishes are utterly lacking in flavor compared to their amazing breakfast options. Somehow, even a simple order like a vegetable plate comes out wrong. So, my advice is to stick with the morning fare, even if you're dining after the sun goes down. Elmo's prices are right, too. Most meals you can get for well under $10 and you will leave stuffed and satisfied.
My perfect Elmo's meal: a custom-made "Breakfast All the Way" (scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, homefries, and a biscuit). Delish!"
