If Revolution is best described as marking the introduction (or, perhaps, return) of outright swank to Durham, Guglhupf is evidence that this town also knows how to play it casually cool. Its location just off the 15-501 highway belies the chic atmosphere of this German bakery and cafe (no need to consult your Rosetta Stone: Guglhupf is a type of German cake). Guglhupf is where the grown-ups go to pore over the Sunday paper, have a really well-brewed cup of coffee, and grab a stollen for later.

With its lovely outdoor patio and minimalist design (the decor prominently features slate and glass), Guglhupf affects an attitude that is unselfconsciously cool. Yes, this is the perfect place to spend a weekend morning--the only problem is that everyone in Durham knows it. Getting one of the too-few tables at Guglhupf on a Sunday is--to put it mildly--a tall order, particularly during the colder months when the absence of outdoor seating cuts your chances of sitting down roughly in half. If, somehow, you do manage to score a seat, the food will make you want to keep it; the fare includes delicious salads (I highly recommend the Mediterranean; sandwiches (the beet-salad on toast is fantastic); and of course, desserts (too numerous, and mouth-watering, to mention). If you fill up on brunch or can't manage to find a seat, the Guglhupf bakery connected to the cafe offers traditional German cakes, cookies, and breads to go.
